7th Grade Science Fair Projects

Biology Continues

In seventh grade, students continue to learn about plant and animal cells.

A more complex look is taken at the specific functions of cells and how they work in relation to an entire organ system. Scientific studies include osmosis and diffusion, both forms of passive transport. For instance, a solute such as table salt will cause osmosis.

This would be a great science fair project: why do salty foods make us thirsty?

In school, your seventh grader will also continue his studies about plant cells and photosynthesis. He will learn how to classify animals according to their means of obtaining oxygen. Here is another good idea for a project: which animals use which forms of cellular respiration?

Earth Science

In earth science, kids will also learn more about the water cycle, which includes evaporation and condensation. They will also study weather patterns such as warm and cold fronts, and will be required to read weather maps. An idea here is to get your child to pay closer attention to the weather report on the news each night!

Other topics include distinguishing and understanding metric units such as weight, mass, volume, density, and size. In chemistry, kids will learn about compounds, mixtures, and elements. Students will learn how to read the periodic table of elements and will be required to learn the scientific symbol for various elements.

Useful tips for science fair projects at this level include demonstrating different mixtures in chemistry. What happens when two different elements are mixed? Include your child's hobbies as they are required to complete these various projects. If your child is an athlete or is particularly interested in health or nutrition (or for that matter, if you'd like to get him involved in these subjects), a good project idea may be to study what happens to the human body under certain rigorous and non-rigorous conditions. At what point will a human sweat? What causes sore muscles after a workout? What foods can help heal sore muscles?

Various Types Of Projects.

Your child may choose to compare several different objects or organisms, or he may be more interested in studying one object or being and testing it under multiple conditions. There must always be a control or a constant element in the experiment, so make sure the conditions are as controlled as possible to receive high marks. For instance, teachers like to steer kids away from using animals in their science projects because they can be difficult to perform consistently when needed.

As long as there are not too many variables, the project is creative and the hypothesis is interesting, you can rest assured that your child will have a winning project.
