5th Grade Science Projects

The Fifth Grader Science Fair Project can be a very fun level of science.

If your child has struggled to appreciate science in earlier years, you may see a change in him or her when it comes to fifth grade science fair projects.

Students will learn how human action can and will affect the environment. Related topics include global warming, depletion of the ozone layer, and air pollution. Your child will see how his own actions have an effect on the earth's environment.

In school, students will learn how animals and humans need plants to survive. Specifically, students will be taught about photosynthesis and transpiration, and why leaves change color in the Fall.

Genetics

Your child will become familiar with the concept of genetics and how your genes have been passed down to him. Adaptation and the characteristics of different animals may become interesting to your child. Why will polar bears survive in the cold and a cactus will survive in the heat? This is a great age to take family trips with your child to expose him to different environments. A school project may include taking a field trip to a nearby museum or zoo.

Endangered Species And Fossils

Teachers will also introduce endangered species and fossils at this level. Students will begin to grasp the survival of the fittest concept and may have many questions about why humans developed into the species we are today. With genetics being a part of the curriculum, this would be a great time to suggest drawing up a family tree to demonstrate heredity.

Outer Space, Astronomy and Planets

Outer space continues to be a focus of study at this level. Planets are studied and compared according to different measures and characteristics. How far are the other planets from Earth? From the Sun? Students will learn about atmospheric cycles, climate versus weather, the water cycle, and how the continents have moved over millions of years.

Interesting Ideas And Topics

Parents are often reluctant to let their child develop his own concept of what is an interesting topic. Try to let go and make simple suggestions to your child about topics for a science fair project. Encourage him to ask questions on his own so he can come up with a good idea that is interesting to him, and will receive high marks with teachers and judges. At this age, the child may be more competitive and therefore may be more concerned with winning. This is a subject for parents to address in a way they feel comfortable. The academic community is dedicated to helping your child learn in the best way possible for him individually. Parents will need to address social skills as they become issues.
